Key Achievements

  • Significant foreign direct investments in the upstream sector of about US$550 million from 2001 to date.
  • Significant improvement in the quantity and quality of data covering the entire offshore sedimentary basins leading to licensing of about 80% of the offshore shallow and deepwater acreage.
  • GNPC owns 12,227.78 sq. km of 3D and 33,126.00 km of 2D seismic data.
  • Exploration and production operations of various degrees are ongoing in Ghana’s four sedimentary basins namely the Cote d’Ivoire-Tano Basin (including Cape Three Points Sub-basin), Central (Saltpond) Basin, Accra/Keta Basin and Inland Voltaian Basin.
  • GNPC has drilled eighteen (18) onshore wells, fifty-five (55) shallow water wells and six (6) deepwater wells to date.
  • Two (2) world class discoveries in addition to Four (4) marginal oil and gas discoveries which have de-risked a significant portion of Ghana’s offshore sedimentary basins.
  • The two significant discoveries which were made in the Deepwater West Cape Three Points and Deepwater Tano blocks are under two separate Petroleum Agreements.  The discovered oil and gas resources in the two blocks were found to be contained in the same reservoir, and will therefore be developed and produced as one unit in order to reduce cost and optimise petroleum recovery. The appraisal of the field so far, indicates expected recoverable reserves of about 800 million barrels of light crude oil. GNPC is ensuring that the field is developed under three-key principles; no gas flaring, zero gas flaring, first oil production by 2010 and a philosophy that maximizes resource value.

 The Managing Director of GNPC says:

“The significant discoveries are not surprising given the extent of work done by the Corporation over the years and the intense interest in the Tano and Cape Three Points basins that these efforts have generated. GNPC’s promotion efforts have been well targeted at recognised industry players with sufficient financial and technical capabilities using the platforms provided by industry meetings and conferences in major oil capitals around the globe.”

  • Currently, there are twelve (12) offshore licences with various companies operating in the basins.  The operating companies, areas of operation and date of petroleum agreement are shown below:

·               Implementation of Corporate Improvement Projects including Data Copying and Transcription Project which is securing the integrity of data and a Computer–aided Interpretation Project which is enabling GNPC to undertake, seismic and geological interpretation interactively on computer work stations.

Looking Ahead………

Given the discoveries made in 2007 and 2008, and in anticipation of the benefits that will be generated, the objective of the Government of Ghana is to ensure that the country controls the management of its resources to promote the welfare of Ghanaians and enhance economic growth in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Government is focusing on a "value creation" model, meaning the effective harnessing of the oil resources to fulfil the national development goals of growth and poverty reduction and the achievement of middle-income status by the year 2015 rather than simply obtaining revenue from petroleum sales.

Within this framework, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation would in the medium term focus on:

·      The optimisation of the benefits from petroleum production;

·      The promotion of investments for the replacement and growth of   reserves to avoid depletion and;

·        The systematic and prudent investments in the building of capacity to manage a wider portfolio of petroleum producing assets.
