GNPC and Partners Launch Livelihood Empowerment Programme in Western and Central Regions

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), in collaboration with its upstream partners led by Eni and Vitol Upstream Ghana Limited, has rolled out an artisanal livelihood empowerment programme for fishing communities along Ghana’s Western and Central Regions.

The programme was launched in Takoradi and will reach over 1,000 verified canoe owners and fishermen across fourteen coastal metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies, including Jomoro, Ellembelle, Ahanta West, Sekondi-Takoradi, Cape Coast, and Mfantseman.

The initiative is a straightforward intervention to support fishermen who operate in areas where offshore oil and gas activities are ongoing. The aim is to help the fishermen work safely and sustainably while oil and gas operations continue. The programme provides basic fishing gear and equipment, along with practical training to help fishermen use it effectively and get the most out of the equipment.

Speaking at the launch, GNPC’s Social Performance Manager, Patience Lartey, made a simple point: the real value of the initiative will come from how well the equipment is used and maintained over time. She also emphasised safety, urging fishermen to use the protective gear provided, noting the difference it can make out at sea.

Beyond the artisanal support, the programme is part of ongoing engagement between the industry and coastal communities, particularly around operating safely near offshore installations. Fishermen were reminded to adhere to established safety guidelines for their own protection and to avoid disruptions to offshore work.

At its core, this is practical support, equipment, guidance, and a continued effort to keep fishing and offshore operations running side by side, safely and without unnecessary risk, for both operators and coastal communities.
