GNPC and UESD Partner to Advance Sustainable Development

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to forging stronger partnerships with academia to advance environmental stewardship, sustainable development, and Ghana’s just energy transition.

At the 5th anniversary celebration of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya, Madam Patience Lartey, GNPC's Manager of Social Performance & Local Content, delivered a keynote address on behalf of CEO Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah. The address commended the university for five years of impactful work in environmental education and research.

Speaking to the theme, "Sustainable Steps to Secure Our Environment: 5 Years of Achievement, Challenges, and Progress," the message emphasized that the relationship between industry and academia must evolve beyond traditional internships and research. Institutions like UESD must become co-creators of solutions, directly shaping policy, informing innovation, and producing the next generation of environmental stewards and scientists.

The address also highlighted GNPC's ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, citing the corporation's integration of rigorous Environmental Impact Assessments, biodiversity protection, and flare reduction in its operations. GNPC continues to support afforestation initiatives, coastal clean-up projects, and sustainable livelihood programs that ensure communities directly benefit from its corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Reaffirming its readiness to work with UESD, GNPC identified key areas for collaboration, including joint research, talent development, knowledge exchange, and projects aligned with Ghana’s broader environmental goals. The message underscored that as the nation navigates its energy transition and confronts climate change, institutions like UESD are essential for ensuring that economic growth and sustainability are complementary forces.

The event brought together government representatives, development partners, faculty, students, and industry leaders, all united by a shared responsibility to protect the environment while driving national development.
