GNPC and UPSA Law School Honour Tsatsu Tsikata for Enduring Contributions to Ghana’s Energy Sector

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), in collaboration with the UPSA Law School, has honoured Mr. Tsatsu Tsikata at the 2026 Honorific Lecture and Award ceremony held in Accra, in recognition of his distinguished lifetime contributions to law, public service, academia, and national development.

The event convened senior government officials, legal practitioners, and academics to celebrate Mr. Tsikata’s influential career and his pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s institutional and policy foundations in the energy sector.

As the Chief Executive of GNPC during its formative years, Mr. Tsikata was acknowledged as providing pivotal strategic leadership at a defining moment for Ghana’s petroleum industry. His tenure was instrumental in establishing offshore exploration capabilities and laying the technical and institutional groundwork for the nation's upstream oil and gas development.

In a solidarity message, GNPC’s Ag. Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah, commended Mr. Tsikata for his enduring impact on the Corporation and the broader energy sector.

“Under your leadership, GNPC laid the foundation for Ghana’s emergence as a new oil province,” Mr. Amoah stated, underscoring the significance of the Corporation’s early strategic direction.

He further noted that Mr. Tsikata’s vision and foresight helped position Ghana to pursue independent offshore exploration and advance its aspirations toward greater energy self-determination.

Mr. Amoah highlighted that GNPC, under Mr. Tsikata’s leadership, pursued exploration in previously uncharted basins and established early momentum for discoveries that would later define Ghana’s upstream petroleum industry. He also referenced early strategic initiatives that supported regional energy development, including foundational work in gas infrastructure planning.

In addition, he acknowledged Mr. Tsikata’s contribution to institutional capacity development within GNPC and the wider sector, particularly in strengthening Ghanaian technical expertise in managing and developing national petroleum resources.

Mr. Amoah noted that GNPC continues to build on these early foundations as it pursues sustained production, expands gas infrastructure, and advances new frontiers such as the Voltaian Basin exploration project.

The ceremony reflects GNPC’s commitment to honoring individuals whose vision has fundamentally shaped Ghana’s energy sector and continues to drive its future growth.
