As part of activities to mark 40 years of empowering dreams and impacting lives, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has commissioned a fully renovated four-unit classroom block at the Republic Road Nursery School, Community 4, Tema, delivering a transformed learning environment for some of the city's youngest pupils as part of the Corporation's 40th anniversary community outreach initiatives.

The commissioning ceremony, attended by the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, representatives from the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, the school's Parent-Teacher Association, GNPC management and staff, as well as officials from the Ghana Education Service, marked the formal handover of a facility comprehensively upgraded for the first time since the school was established in 1969.

Headmistress Mrs. Mavis Adatsi Jessie set the tone for the occasion in her welcome remarks, describing the commissioning as far more than the opening of a refurbished building. She characterised it as a journey, from challenge to opportunity, from need to provision, and from hope to fulfilment. Expressing the gratitude of the entire school community, she noted that the intervention would give the nursery pupils the dignity of beginning their educational journey in a safe, attractive, and inspiring environment.

Speaking at the ceremony, Manager for Sustainability and Corporate Social Investment (S&CSI), Ms. Lubaabat Habib-Jawulaa, outlined the breadth of work undertaken. The renovation encompassed a new ceiling, windows and doors, resolution of longstanding electrical faults, installation of ceiling fans, floor tiling, and a full repaint of the classrooms. The refurbished block was furnished with eco-friendly tables and chairs fabricated from recycled plastic bottles and sachet water bags, a thoughtful choice that underscores sustainability alongside functionality. Additional improvements included a three-seater sanitary facility fitted with a shower, a 500-litre polytank, and a refurbished staff common room complete with new furniture, all provided by GNPC.

The Director of Education for Tema Metropolitan, Ms. Bernice Ofori, acknowledged that while infrastructure renovation is primarily a government responsibility, constrained public resources often leave such needs unmet. GNPC's contribution, she noted, has meaningfully complemented government efforts and brought renewed dignity to the children's formative years.

Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. Ebi Bright, expressed delight at the completion of the renovation, noting that Republic Road Nursery School had already been identified as a priority institution for the city. She welcomed GNPC's decision to include the school among the beneficiaries of its 40th anniversary commemoration, describing the initiative as one that signals to children that a safe, healthy, and stimulating learning environment is not a privilege but a minimum standard they deserve. Hon. Ebi Bright also confirmed the Assembly's commitment to continuing the momentum, with the school set to benefit from a GETFUND allocation to rebuild the remaining portions of the facility.

Speaking on behalf of GNPC's Chief Executive Officer, the Director for Human Resources and Administration reflected on the deeper significance of the initiative. He described the renovation as emblematic of GNPC's institutional DNA, one defined by a commitment to leaving enduring legacies in the communities that have hosted and supported the Corporation throughout its journey. He noted that 40 years is not merely an occasion for celebration but a moment for honest reflection on impact and a call to consider how GNPC's presence has genuinely touched the lives of those beyond its operational boundaries. The commissioning, he observed, was ultimately a celebration of what becomes possible when people collaborate for a common purpose.

The event also drew generous support from corporate partners. EPP Books Services provided books for the nursery pupils; Twellium Industrial Company supplied Verna bottled water and Bego drinks; M4 Foods Ghana provided biscuits; Coca-Cola Ghana contributed bottled water and beverages; and Promasidor Limited provided Cowbell milk drinks.

The Republic Road Nursery School renovation is a vivid expression of GNPC's social investment philosophy, one that recognises the Corporation's impact extends beyond barrels and revenues to the quality of life it helps shape in the communities across the country. As GNPC enters its fifth decade, initiatives such as this affirm that its most enduring legacy may well be the futures it helps build, one community at a time.
