GNPC Continues Talent Development Drive with Engagement at UDS

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has reinforced its commitment to youth development and industry capacity building through a two-day student engagement programme with the Geological Engineering Department of the University for Development Studies (UDS).

Held in collaboration with the School of Engineering at the University’s Nyankpala campus, the programme provided students with an opportunity to interact directly with professionals from Ghana’s National Oil Company. The engagement focused on career pathways in the energy sector, the realities of the technical industry, and the competencies required to build successful careers in the field.

The GNPC delegation, comprising professionals from Human Resources, Engineering, and Geology, was led by Mr. Daniel Ayihi, Manager for Learning and Competency Development.

The opening day centred on industry exposure and technical engagement. GNPC delivered a presentation on the Corporation’s operations, internship pathways, and graduate opportunities and participated in a panel discussion covering the role of hydrocarbons in the energy mix, technology and innovation, and career development for emerging geoscientists.

“This drive, for us at GNPC, is not motivated by a need to be seen,” Mr. Ayihi said. “We place great importance on giving students practical exposure to industry, helping them understand the competencies the professional environment demands, and shaping their readiness for the world of work.”

Students also engaged the GNPC team through networking sessions, mentorship conversations, CV reviews, and other career-focused interactions.

As part of efforts to strengthen career preparedness, GNPC’s Human Resources team supervised an aptitude test and facilitated a CV writing session, while the technical team led a classroom session designed to help students bridge the gap between academic learning and practical industry experience.

“Industry readiness is built over time,” Mr. Ayihi added. “The earlier students are exposed to how organisations like GNPC operate, the better positioned they are to develop the mindset and discipline required to contribute meaningfully.”

Other members of the GNPC delegation included Victoria Abankwa and Michael Owusu-Boampong from Human Resources; Bernard Nwea-Ackah Mochia, Deputy Manager, Geology; Richard Asmah and Michael Kwaning from Engineering; Clifford Addai Mensah, Geologist; and Nana Adwoa Boahin, Geophysicist.

The engagement at UDS forms part of GNPC’s broader efforts to support the development of local talent and prepare the next generation of professionals for Ghana’s evolving energy sector.
