GNPC Foundation's Investment in Healthcare Yields 151 New Doctors
The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Foundation has welcomed 151 newly qualified medical doctors who completed their training in Cuba. This initiative, a key part of the GNPC's foreign scholarship program, shows a big commitment to Ghana's healthcare sector and building a strong and efficient health system.
The graduates, trained in Cuba's renowned community-oriented medical education system, are now ready to fill critical healthcare gaps, especially in underserved and rural areas of Ghana. This group joins previous GNPC-trained professionals who are already delivering essential services nationwide.
The program is a strategic component of the GNPC Foundation's broader human capital development efforts. The foundation has supported over 6,000 students across various educational fields, with health scholarships being a core focus.
The arrival of these 151 doctors will significantly boost Ghana's healthcare capacity. As Dr. Iddris Yahya, the overall best graduating medical student, stated, "Without the support of GNPC, many of us would not have realized this dream. Their investment has prepared us to return home to strengthen Ghana's healthcare system."
This accomplishment resonates deeply with the graduates and their families. After years of remote support, parents were visibly moved. Mrs. Joana Biney-Afful, a mother of one of the graduates, expressed her pride, stating, "Now I have a medical doctor in my family. It has been a long journey, and I am very grateful to GNPC."
Ms. Helga J. M. Boadi, Executive Director of the GNPC Foundation, underscored the long-term vision behind the program. "Our investment in training doctors, building health facilities, and providing essential medical equipment demonstrates GNPC’s long-term commitment to the well-being of Ghanaians," she said. "These doctors represent both a return on investment and a renewed hope for improved access to healthcare across the country."
This initiative directly supports Ghana's efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by strengthening health infrastructure and bridging gaps in access to care. The GNPC Foundation continues to leverage petroleum revenues to create lasting social value, solidifying its role as a key contributor to Ghana's development.
