GNPC, Government, and Partners Advance Next Phase of OCTP Gas Development

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), together with the Government of Ghana, ENI Ghana E&P, and Vitol Upstream Ghana Limited, has signed a key term sheet to support the next phase of domestic gas development under the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) project.

The agreement establishes a framework of commercial principles to advance the proposed OCTP Non-Associated Gas (NAG) Upgrade Project, which is expected to significantly expand domestic gas supply in the coming years.

The signing, led by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Jinapor, and the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, builds on the Memorandum of Intent signed by the parties in September 2025 as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Ghana’s energy sector through long-term strategic investment.

Under the planned upgrade, gas production from OCTP is expected to increase by up to 350 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) by 2028, subject to formal project approvals and implementation timelines.

The planned upgrade is expected to include the development of the Gye Nyame field, installation of a booster compressor, and additional gas infrastructure on the project’s FPSO to enhance production capacity.

OCTP remains one of Ghana’s most important domestic gas assets and continues to play a major role in supporting thermal power generation across the country.

The planned expansion is expected to strengthen energy security, reduce reliance on imported fuels, and support growing demand from homes, businesses, and industry.

Commenting on the development, Ag. Chief Executive Officer of GNPC, Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah, described the agreement as an important step in safeguarding Ghana’s long-term energy growth through sustained investment in domestic gas infrastructure and strategic collaboration.

“Natural gas remains critical to Ghana’s energy mix, industrial growth, and economic competitiveness. This planned expansion shows the importance of sustained partnership and investment in strengthening domestic supply, supporting reliable power generation, and advancing the long-term energy security objectives for the country,” he said.

The agreement marks another important milestone in ongoing collaboration amongst the government, GNPC, and partners to expand domestic gas supply, strengthen Ghana’s long-term energy security and economic growth.
