GNPC Inspires UCC Students: Cultivating Skills Beyond Academic Credentials
The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Ghana's emerging professionals by participating in the 2025 Career and Skills Fair. This event, organized by TEDxUniversityofCapeCoast in partnership with the University of Cape Coast (UCC), centered on the theme "Skills and Experience: Your Valuable Asset." The fair served as an important platform, bringing together students, alumni, and industry leaders to discuss career opportunities and the changing landscape of work.
Dr. Edward Appiah-Brafo, GNPC's Director of Human Resources and Administration, delivered the keynote address as the Guest of Honour. Drawing on his experience as a UCC alumnus and his professional insights, Dr. Appiah-Brafo provided timely guidance for navigating the contemporary professional environment.
He emphasized the diminishing primacy of academic certificates alone, stating, "The future of work goes far beyond academic certificates. It demands emotional intelligence, integrity, and adaptability. These are now your most valuable assets." Dr. Appiah-Brafo urged students to proactively cultivate their talents into competitive career skills, emphasizing that "success requires a raised standard, not lowered expectations." He asserted that the traditional expectation of government employment post-graduation is obsolete, stressing that "Your talent and competence will create employment for you."
Dr. Appiah-Brafo also highlighted the dynamic evolution within the oil and gas industry, noting GNPC's adoption of technological advancements, clean energy solutions, and integrated systems. This progression, he explained, necessitates talent that is forward-thinking, emotionally intelligent, and values-driven.
He strongly encouraged students to pursue mentorship opportunities, approach internships with seriousness, and invest in continuous self-development beyond formal academic settings. Drawing inspiration from scripture, he concluded by asserting that a hopeful future requires "deliberate action, faith, and perseverance." His final call to action resonated with students: "Do not wait for the future to come to you. Step forward. Take ownership. Be bold. Be emotionally intelligent. Be ready."
Beyond the keynote, GNPC staff from the Human Resource and Technical Departments provided direct career guidance to students. They actively engaged attendees on internship opportunities, national service placements, and graduate programs offered by GNPC. A dedicated booth facilitated interactive discussions, allowing students to explore possibilities within Ghana's upstream oil and gas sector.
GNPC's active involvement in the Career and Skills Fair underscores its fundamental belief that sustainable national development hinges on preparing future leaders for impactful contributions.
