GNPC Marks International Coastal Cleanup Day at Sakumono Beach
The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has marked this year’s International Coastal Cleanup Day with a cleanup exercise at Sakumono Beach in Tema, popularly known as Titanic Beach.
Held on Friday, 18 September 2026, the exercise brought together GNPC staff and other partners, including the Tema West Municipal Assembly, Zoomlion and the Blow Group of Companies, to clear waste along the beach and support efforts to keep the area clean.
The exercise was organised as part of activities to mark the 2026 International Coastal Cleanup Day, which draws attention to marine litter and encourages action to keep beaches and waterways clean.
GNPC Manager of Administration, Mr. Frank Fiaka, said the Corporation considers supporting cleaner communities around its operations part of its responsibility. “As a responsible corporate citizen, we believe we have a role to play in keeping the communities around us clean. Sakumono Beach is close to our operational base in Tema, so it was important for us to come out, work with our partners, and contribute to keeping the area clean,” he said.
Mr. Fiaka added that the exercise was not intended to be a one-off activity, with similar cleanup activities being considered on a quarterly basis.
President of the GNPC Senior Staff Association, Mr. Ernest Youngman, also stressed the importance of environmental protection to the Corporation, particularly given the nature of its operations. “For us at GNPC, it is important that we take care of the environment,” he said.
He noted that while this was GNPC’s first cleanup exercise at Sakumono Beach, the Corporation had previously undertaken similar activities around its head office and hoped to sustain the initiative and extend it to other areas.
Deputy Municipal Chief Executive for Tema West, Mr. Henry Akakuli, commended GNPC and the other participating organisations for supporting sanitation efforts in the municipality. “The Assembly cannot do it all alone. We need institutions and organisations to take a cue from what GNPC is doing,” he said.
The Tema West Municipal Assembly supported the exercise with logistics for waste collection and disposal, including a waste truck to transport the collected refuse to a designated landfill site.
The Corporation will continue to work with local authorities and other stakeholders to support environmental protection and improved sanitation in communities around its operations, reflecting its responsibility towards the environment, particularly given the Corporation’s offshore operations.
