Shaping Ghana's Energy Future: GNPC Inspires Next Generation of Petroleum Professionals at UMaT Career Fair

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has reiterated its commitment to developing the next generation of petroleum professionals, as the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), through its School of Petroleum Studies (SPetS), held its annual “Time with Our Industry Partners” programme. Now a firm fixture on both institutions' calendars, the initiative connects students with mentorship, networking opportunities, and first-hand insight into careers in the oil and gas sector.

In his welcome address, Assoc. Prof. Eric Broni-Bediako, Chairman and Dean of SPetS, highlighted the significant benefits the partnership has delivered to successive cohorts of students. He commended GNPC for constructing an ultramodern classroom unit for the School of Petroleum Studies, describing it as a strategic investment that strengthens industry-academia collaboration and provides students with an enabling environment to develop the practical knowledge and skills required to excel in the energy sector.

Representatives from GNPC's Human Resources Department used the platform to engage with students and highlight the diverse career and professional development opportunities available within the Corporation. Linda Esaah-Fenyi, Senior HR Officer, Learning & Competency Development, guided students through GNPC's internship and national service pathways, providing practical insights into the Corporation's application processes and requirements. Jennifer Worwornyo, HR Officer, Resourcing & Organisational Development, urged students to embrace emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, as an essential tool for enhancing their skills, adaptability, and career readiness in the evolving energy industry.

A presentation on career opportunities for graduate engineers and energy professionals was delivered by Fredrick Kofi Osei-Poku, Deputy Manager, Geomatic Engineering, with support from GNPC alumni of UMaT. The session provided students with valuable insights into GNPC's operations, Ghana's upstream petroleum industry, the country's current oil production landscape, and the ongoing exploration activities under the Voltaian Basin Project. It also offered practical perspectives on career pathways and the technical competencies required to thrive in the energy sector.

The programme also featured an interactive exhibition and industry booth, where staff from GNPC's Corporate Communications Department engaged students through mentorship discussions, interactive question-and-answer sessions, and networking opportunities designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practice.

The “Time with Our Industry Partners” programme reflects GNPC’s continued commitment to nurturing future petroleum professionals by combining technical knowledge, career guidance, and mentorship. For UMaT students, the collaboration offers more than practical exposure; it opens a pathway to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s energy future.
